Travel - The Hotel of the Future

By John Sunyer

Gatwick airport has a new hotel that offers something different, a view of a future without employees where a computer does everything. At Bloc, a hotel of 245 rooms, there are only two members of staff on duty.

The location above the airport’s South Terminal is not very glamorous, but Bloc has big plans to completely change the hotel industry. Thanks to help from Samsung, almost everything here is controlled by smartphone. After guests make a reservation online, they receive a code they can use to log into an app, which lets them check in without waiting at a reception desk. In the room, the phone can operate the air-conditioning, switch on lights, turn on TVs and open blinds. Guests do not even need keys because they can open the door to their room with their phone. When guests leave they check out using the app and complete their stay without speaking a word to a member of staff.

“The idea at Bloc is to make everything efficient and to automate the hotel experience. We want to make travelling stress-free, with no waiting around,” says Rob Morgan, Bloc’s director. “Your smartphone becomes your wallet, key and remote control. We make it possible for guests to sleep, shower and take their flight.”

People without smartphones can use the same app on tablet computers available in the rooms (and technophobes can make a booking in the traditional way).

Even with this modern technology, rooms here are cheap: doubles start from £54, while corner rooms—bigger and offering views across the runway—go up to £84. The low prices are possible because Bloc removed all the “unnecessary space”, so they can offer more rooms. The hotel on four floors does not have a restaurant, room service or a mini-bar. “If you want to do laundry or visit a spa, Bloc is not the right hotel for you,” Morgan admits.

Hotel guests usually do not unpack their overnight bag so rooms do not have big wardrobes. All the rooms are small but they are well-designed. The only free item is a small bottle of water and some offers for the airport cafés, restaurants and supermarkets.

The double bed is surprisingly comfortable, but the sheets are nothing special. No problem: you do not come here for the luxury but because it is cheap—and to avoid sleeping on several seats in the terminal like other poor travellers.
